Autonomously Cruising Detroit with May Mobility

Last night in beautiful, bustling downtown Detroit you may have seen this peculiar green pod cruising through town. What you may not have known was that it was driving people around autonomously through the city among the people, cars and buses without anyone being a wiser.

Except for those of us in the vehicle who were complete awestruck.

Meet May Mobility a self-driving microtransit service, who was working on a test deployment in downtown Detroit. I was lucky enough to hitch a ride and learn more about the shuttle and the technology that makes it special.

Here is my Facebook Live broadcast from the ride-along:

This was not my first time riding in an autonomous vehicle, however it was the most seamless experience. The other vehicles I've been on have been more of a test vehicle, meaning a regular consumer vehicle was retrofitted to be autonomous and the interior was littered with computers and monitoring equipment. The May Mobility shuttle, which didn't have a steering wheel, looks polished and makes you feel more comfortable as a rider.

What do you think? Would you be comfortable riding along autonomously?
