"Faster Horses" at Work on Mackinac Island
There’s a quote from Henry Ford that is sewn into the fabric of modern innovation. It’s simple, super-quotable, and everyone gets it.
If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.
The saying comes up a lot around here but it has never rang more true than this past week while staying on the historic Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan for the Mackinac Policy Conference.
The island, which is doesn't allow motor vehicles, is like stepping into the past. A bustling yet quaint downtown city, historic military fort, hiking trails, and miles and miles of lakeshore to bike, swim and enjoy--Mackinac Island has something for everyone.
However the interesting part is when you need to hitch a ride to dinner or across the island. Call a taxi and you will be greeted with a two-horse powered transporter.
While riding through the woods on my way to dinner one night I got to thinking: ONE maybe he should have invented faster horses, this is taking awhile and I'm hungry. And TWO what would Henry say about the public's perception on autonomous vehicles?
Would he be supportive? Would he still feel that the industry knows best? Would he have the same feeling about pushing innovation and pushing consumers out of the comfort zones for the sake of efficiency and increased mobility?
